  9.  AB    The regulatory and accessory proteins of human immunodeficiency virus
  10.        type 1 (HIV-1) are produced from singly or multiply spliced mRNAs. We
  11.        have used HIV-1 specific oligonucleotide primer pairs in a polymerase
  12.        chain reaction procedure on cDNA reverse transcribed from cytoplasmic
  13.        RNA extracted from lymphocytic cell lines infected with HIV-1 228200.
  14.        The amplified products were analysed by hybridisation with spliced
  15.        junction-specific oligonucleotide probes to determine splice
  16.        donor/splice acceptor combination utilisation and the temporal
  17.        expression of different mRNA species. This work has led to the
  18.        identification of two novel splice acceptor sites which are used in the
  19.        early production of a series of distinct RNAs upon acute infection.
  20.        These RNAs have also been demonstrated in infected cells by in-situ
  21.        hybridisation with the splice junction specific probes. Work is
  22.        currently being carried out to determine the function of these RNAs.
